Wani sahab was a terrorist initially and became a counter-insurgent after he realised the futility of violence.He surrendered and became a part of the Ikhwan(a terrorist who surrenders and helps the government in catching other terrorist) a group led by Javed Ahmad Shah.
Nazir joined 162 Infantry Battalion TA, a Territorial Army battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, in 2004.He was awarded Sena Medal in 2007 for gallantry and for a second time in 2018, for killing a terrorist in close combat.
According to one of his relatives, Wani had killed around thirty terrorists including some major terrorists. "Throughout his active life, he always willingly faced grave potential threats and was a source of inspiration for others." — Colonel Rajesh Kalia, Defence spokesman
Over the years, Lance Naik Wani was involved in 17 crucial counter-insurgency operations. In June 2019, in a tribute to Nazir, Indian Army renamed their 'Army Goodwill School ,Wuzur' to 'Shaheed Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani, Ashok Chakra, Sena Medal** Army Goodwill School Wuzur'
A true soldier and a true Kashmiri. Real life rambo. His gallantry awards speaks volumes of his courage and spirit. Today this day in 2018,he sacrificed his life for this nation.
